Rex Ryan MMA Champ

I don’t know if you noticed this weekend but Jets coach Rex Ryan attended an MMA show in Miami.  While the fighters were throwing kicks, punches, elbows, wrestling moves, and anything else they could - Rex Ryan was throwing the bird to Miami Dolphin admirers.  That was probably the cleanest punch all night!  While Herschel Walker was making is MMA Continue reading →

George Carlin Would be Mad!

I’m a big George Carlin fan and love so many of his comedy routines.  However, one of my favorite one liners from him was “vuja de” - which is the feeling that somehow NONE OF THIS has happened before.  Of course, this doesn’t apply to Brett Favre and his interception at the end of the game - just ask Corey Webster of the Giants.  If vuja de applies, it would have to be that Favre was on the road this time and was at home in Lambeau last time but since he grew up in Saints country, even that doesn’t apply.

If we sold football jerseys here, I would immediately begin selling a Saints jersey with Favre’s name and his number on Continue reading →

The Price of Playoff & Super Bowl Tickets

Gotta love the bad economy!  While unemployment is over 10% and the forecast is for further job losses, I found some advertising for playoff tickets incredible today.  In fact, the popular website I often check for super bowl tickets showed you can grab a “cheap” seat for about $2,000 and lower level tickets for around $10,000 - I wonder what parking costs?  A good thing the Pro Bowl will be played a week before the super bowl so that you can just stick around after that game to Continue reading →

How Brett Favre Turned Purple to Green

While the jury might be out on what Brett Favre can still do on the field, one thing there is no doubt about is that he is a one man economic stimulus package for the Twin Cities!  While Brett is going to cost the Vikings about $12 million this season for the contract he signed, he immediately generated $2-3 million yesterday for the team in the sales of new season tickets and individual game tickets - sales that will continue to increase for the next several weeks before we even know if the risky addition is even going to work out.  Since people that attend football games spend money on food and drink, that probably adds another million dollars to the value.  When sales for his football jerseys are included, that revenue range increases another $2-$5 million in sales.  High five to the apparel company that Continue reading →

Judge Smails Reborn??

I understand that John Daley has gone through some tough times but what the hell is going on while this athletic apparel? Caddyshack is about 30 years old and I now feel like Judge Smails or Spaulding has been reborn watching Daley’s recent gold clothes at the British and the PGA. Did he suffer a blow to the head recently or is he paying tribute to the 40th anniversary of Woodstock? I’d understand torn jeans and a sleeveless tee but not whatever paisley print he was wearing.

I’ve got to admit that I’m a big John Daley fan - what golf fan doesn’t want to smash a drive 350 yards and have the incredible touch he had? I’m also an optimist and have hoped that he would be able to pull his life out of the nose dive it was taking for the past decade because he would be the ultimate foe for Tiger. I would be corporate Tiger vs beer chugging John. The differences can’t get more pronounced than that and the tv ratings would go through the roof which would mean golf apparel companies would be able to show their newest golf clothes to a much larger audience. However, with the recent golf apparel John is wearing, I don’t know if that would be good or bad for all golf clothes companies.

“Pulled Hamstring” of a Salesman 2009 – Charles Barkley

Most of us had “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller as required reading in either high school or college. The tragic story of Willie Loman, a common man, has many lessons that can be applied to our everyday lives. Since our society holds athletes, including former ones like Charles in such a high profile manner, a Greek tragedy might be more fitting. However, Charles Barkley has a way to say things that common people identify with and a personality that has been an excellent fit for NBA broadcasts that frequently draws attention to himself and his network. The attention was turned up a level or 16 on New Year’s Eve when Charles was arrested in Scottsdale, AZ for failing field sobriety tests with a woman that is not his wife.

The reason that I felt Arthur Miller’s novel was especially fitting is that Charles Barkley is a salesman through and through. He sold athletic apparel like few others during his playing days. If it wasn’t for Michael Jordan, Barkley might Continue reading →

If the PGA Tour Falls in the “Woods”, Does New Golf Apparel Make a Sound?

I LOVE GOLF and play it as frequently as I can, at least when we live in a warm climate where you can play all year round. Instead to taking my son sledding today, I would have rather taken him to the driving range or out for a round of father/son seeing nature by looking for golf balls in the trees. So it was a complete surprise to me that the season actually started this weekend with the Mercedes-Benz Championship played on The Plantation Course in Kapalua on the Island of Maui. This is a tournament that truly lives up to the name “championship” since you have to be a winner during the previous PGA season to be invited and the facilities are nothing short of golf nirvana! If you have never Continue reading →
